The Bioinformatics Centre at KAU, Thrissur was set up in 1995 as the 23rd Distributed Information Sub Centre (DISC) under the Biotechnology Information System Network (BTIS
Net) programme, of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The Centre was upgraded to DIC during 2004 with the objective to support Biotechnology research. The centre has shifted to new premises in September 2006 which also has facilities for wet lab work. The communication facilities at the centre is strengthened by the 3Mbps leased line internet connectivity from AIRTEL. The Centre conducts training programmes in Bioinformatics for scientists working in the University and procures databases in the field of Agriculture and related domains. A (2+2) credit course in Bioinformatics is offered to the Postgraduate students of Centre for Plant Biotechnology and Molecular Biology.

Future
activities would be to initiate Bioinformatics research in collaboration with Biotechnology, to create a digitized database of the existing data on crop germplasm in the university, to obtain copyright and update the existing databases. The Centre proposes to conduct training programmes for staff working in neighbouring institutions also. Other activities would be enabling of CD-ROM search facility locally on the databases developed for university level users, to enable an E print facility to act as a repository for research articles by integrating data generated from Biotechnology division and other affiliated research stations, development of teaching aids [practical manual] in Bioinformatics, Open source journal accessibility for M.Sc. students, and procurement of Books and Journals in Bioinformatics. Steps are being taken to introduce a course on Bioinformatics for
PhD students for which the draft syllabus has been formulated and submitted for approval
